Nice

Lately the definition has become a bit blurred though. Like how some people only consider something “open source” if it also has a copyleft license.

PRs and issues are not a mandatory part of opensource.

You can literally bundle your code and serve it on some random page on a blog and it would be considered opensource.

• Fancy layout and theme
• Easy to understand. Receive a Discord link and it’ll ask you to download Discord or join using their web app.
• Media support (images, gifs, videos, sounds), Youtube embed, etc
• Easy to make your own server. Click 5 things and you have one.
• Voice chat with screenshare and even party games
• Free (but ofcourse they steal your data)
• Channels purely for pinning and sharing information. Including channels that look more like a forum.
• No need to remake an account on all the servers.
• And a lot more.

People want something else though because Discord is very bad privacy wise. They keep shoving their premium features in your face. Have horrible support and can ban for an out of context “i’m 10 years old”. (Even if the next message is “i’m joking”). They have been known to share information about protest organizers with governments, take an extremely long amount of time to remove malicious and predatory servers. And so much more.

People want something that can offer them the comfort of Discord, with the freedom of IRC.

Important word here: “protester”.

It’s pretty interesting but there’s a few things that would make it a lot better:

• I have absolutely no idea how to upload a PDF. I can only make lorem ipsum ones. It should have a lot more support for dropping files onto the webpage. Maybe even a quick upload box in your sidebar on the homepage.
• The download button should not open a new tab or change the location or anything. Use the HTML5 ‘download’ attribute instead.
• Increase (top/bottom) margins between PDF entries, it’s too condensed
• The progress bar doesn’t automatically update when you close a PDF. When reading a PDF, I scroll to the bottom, click the little X in top right, and have to press F5 before seeing the progress bar update on the page.
• Make it tell the browser that it’s already a darkmode website (for stuff like DarkReader)
