IMO, Dan has some responsibility but more of it lies with Mastodon and other microblogging software that labels this post type as “private”, “followers only” or similar without any further explanation. Moreover we need to do a better job of letting users know that anything posted on the internet, and especially anything posted to the fediverse where it’s backed up on potentially thousands of servers, should be assumed to be publicly-visible and eternal.
